Leaving the shore of Bahia Honda, State Park is an exploit. Just 24 hours have passed since our landing and where like plumbed into full summer again. It is fantastic how at the same time we are afraid to leave towards Key West, on the extreme point of Florida Key. Tree days of full vacation are waiting for us. Well, how will they be? Magazines and tour book design it as a small paradise, but we know that not always the others opinions full our pleasure. Besides the entire hurricane has probable left a lot of damage. Well nothing else to do but continue our trip; the journey is not long ,a little over fifty kilometers made of a myriad of small islands connected by unlimited bridges. The views are always marvelous; delighted by a light beach breeze that announces the evening arriving. The sun remains hot for the whole day, even if the sun hours during the winter are limited, more or less an extra hour from Italy. We have arrived to the island of Key West; and to think we are at less then 90 km from Cuba.
The city entrance is not the most. Immediately always, present military bases, then typical commercial buildings and the inevitable square- central parking. We remain a few minutes with no breath; we planed to stay a few days to live and snatch the rhythm of Caribbean zone, that until now haven’t seen present the impression is that the island has been cut in two islands, a sign indicates that we are entering in the stoical part of Key West. In the time to make a little more then 10 meters the architecture of the houses change, the pastel colors of the buildings changes constantly. The streetlights make you go back 100 years. However, the thing that really caught us is the calm quietness you meet along the street, without almost no cars and full of bicycles. Only after word, we understood that the whole city circulation is in vehicles with pedals or the most scooters. A dream considering that soon the days of traffic using alternated targets in Italy.
This time, and you notice the difference the hotel has been chosen by Babi. A beautiful resort on the south seashore coast of the island (calmer and sunnier). A building dates back the beginning of the 900’s, with all the comforts and especially a private beach that would envy the carbines. Congratulation, at least for this time she managed to avoid the classical American motels. It is a choice we would repeat, even because the shores are almost all private, the only free shore is at Fort Zachary Taylor, on the west point of the island. Continuing in direction of our hotel threw the sunny streets, with the reflection of the beach always on our side; suddenly it seams you have left the hectic United States; it is a strange situation hard to describe. Once arranged in our room we decide to throw ourselves on the exploration of the streets of Key West.
Soon the night is falling and the sky is going on fire with all the color tones of yellow, red, and blue. It is the famous Sunset Celebration well known in Florida. Local and Tourist reunite in the animated area of Mallory Square, where booths serving appetizers, stalls of hawkers and street artist you get overwhelmed of the breath-taking sunset show. The sun dives literally in the sea, like an actor that always tries the same part thousand of times giving the best of all the rainbow colors in the sky. We have never seen anything similar and neither have the hundreds of tourist on our side considering the expression on their faces. We suggest going at least an hour before the sunset to get a good position on the pier, and take unforgettable pictures. To complete the show a group of small sailing vessels playing on the background creating every minute postcard imagines.
We really feel like in another world. We think this is the most beautiful point of Florida, where you can get exciting every night it is really a pure Caribbean beach, it is possible to do bird watching, snorkeling, or visit the fascinating Fort Jefferson, on the Garden Key. An excursion takes a whole day. The days are not many so we prefer concentrating on what Key West offers, maybe next time for the excursion. The choice of Florida was just a distraction from the cold winter of Rimini, but after a few days, it seams ages where away from home. Without any dough, who would not like to pack their luggage and move here, where the sun is hot all year, were stress seams a tongue twister. After a few days passed in the resort on the beach, cuddled with a cocktail in your amaca, or out on your bike during the sunset, breakfast on the shore in early morning; how can you think of leaving all this? We can lively recommend Key West, even if afterwards the end of the vacation will leave a terrible effect. Dedicate more days possible, Key West is a good medicine against any illness. |
